Ruby-crowned Kinglet

These are strange small busy birds, and hard to catch sitting still long enough to get a photo.  I noticed this little guy yesterday while making a circle through the Salem Audubon Nature Reserve. Male Ruby-crowned Kinglets have the ability to flash their red crown when trying to impress a female, or when agitated with an intruder. I presume it was the latter in this case, as he spent 5 – 10 minutes running through a series of antics that I can only conclude was meant to have the effect of scaring away the weird guy with the camera. It didn’t work, and he had to eventually give up and fly away.

  2. Great pictures!! I posted a picture of a ruby crowned kinglet in my blog yesterday but I only got a TINY glimpse of the ruby crown. He was covered in raindrops though and that was kinda neat. They are quick little guys and hard to shoot. Love that last picture - really shows some "attitude."

  3. Very interesting shot of the Ruby-crown with the raindrops, and a nice "personal record" list of birds. Attracting a Varied Thrush with an orange has got my mind in motion.

    1. Surprisingly I don't think the orange interested him except maybe for the color. He seemed to be eating tiny bits of peanuts left on the rail by the squirrel and jays. I didn't think the Thrush would eat peanuts but he was sure pecking away at something.
